Abstract
The influence of the sign and the magnitude magnetostriction constant λs on various physical properties was studied. The stress dependence of the hysteresis, of the electrical resistivity, the Mössbauer hyperfine field and the neutron depolarisation was measured on ribbons with λs > 0 and λs < 0. The change of the Young´s modulus with the external stress and the applied field also sensitively reflects the sign of λs as demonstrated on Fe85 B15 .
