  • Abstract
Summary form only given. The three papers that follow this introduction make up the second of the two Joint Special Issues of the CAS Magazine devoted reconfigurable wireless terminals. The first Issue, published in March and also made up of three contributions, focused on hardware implementations of the RF, Analog Base Band and Digital Base Band portions of multimode/multistandard reconfigurable terminals. More specifically, the second paper from Desoli and Filippi "presents an overview of the evolution of mobile terminal architectures, from monolithic to flexible, modular, and capable of meeting the increasing demand for an ever larger number of features at the right cost and time to market." Finally the third and last paper by Cabric et al. takes a more long term view of the terminal evolution addressing spectrum sharing radios that make use of Ultra Wideband transmission and Cognitive techniques.
