Abstract :
Multiple-order passive frequency modulation (FM) locking in 980-nm lasers has been measured using autocorrelation and optical spectra. Optical fiber dispersion provided a simple means of converting the coherent FM output to an amplitude modulation (AM) pulse train at multiples of the laser round-trip frequency. We have produced such pulses at frequencies of up to 233 GHz from a single source with no external modulation. Extension of this technique should be possible with 1550-nm lasers.<>
