Abstract
Zehavi (1992) generalised the TCM (trellis coded modulation) concept by interleaving the coded bits from the convolutional encoder (CE) prior to channel symbol mapping. The authors present a novel approach whereby the performance over the Rayleigh fading channel is significantly improved (maintained relative to TCM for the AWGN channel). More coded bits are produced prior to interleaving and channel symbol mapping than is the case for the Zehavi generalisation. By expanding the set of channel symbols, spectral spreading is avoided
