Abstract
In this paper the mechanism of CrO2 video tape headwear is described. In tapes which contain only CrO2 , headwear increases with increasing hardness of the coating. Hardness is characterized by the Young´s modulus. By employing the soft ZnO pigment in magnetic CrO2 tapes, it is possible to regulate headwear (H.W.) in the desired range of 0.5<H.W.<1 μm per 100 hrs. playing time in VHS recorders. This means that the use of CrO2 /ZnO results in the unique situation of low headwear, no rubbing noise and no head clogging problems.
