Abstract :
The magnetic force of open-gradient superconducting separators in magnets not using iron is limited by the achievable current density in the conductor and the unavoidable thermal insulation distance between the winding and the separation region. These limits are discussed for simple geometries and their effect on the capacity of the separator are outlined.
