Abstract :
An alpha scintillation detector more rugged and durable than conventional models has been developed. The newly developed scintillator assembly consists of a mixture of silver-activated zinc sulfide [ZnS(Ag)] and clear epoxy. The ZnS(Ag) scintillation powder is mixed with a low-viscosity, optically transparent epoxy and poured into a glass-smooth mold of desired shape and size. The scintillator particles settle to the bottom of the epoxy, leaving a smooth scintillator that can be easily covered with an opaque material once the epoxy has cured. Results have shown this detector to be strong, durable, and slightly more efficient than conventional alpha scintillation detectors. The extra ruggedness offered by this monolithic assembly makes the detector more durable for field surveys; therefore, it requires less maintenance than conventional alpha detectors using Mylar entrance windows
