Abstract :
The recycling process for end-of-life (EOL) products generally consists of disassembly, the material recovery process following shredding, and the treatment of hazardous and nonhazardous wastes. A large volume of literature addresses the optimization of EOL product recycling with a focus on these three steps. This study proposes a two-stage heuristic method to simulate and identify an optimal disassembly sequence as well as a break point between the disassembly and shredding processes. With this heuristic method, a ldquonearlyrdquo optimal disassembly and recycling process can be found for any given set of cost/benefit parameters such as unit disassembly cost, price of reclaimed materials, and unit cost of waste disposal. An example illustrating optimized disassembly and recycling processes for EOL LCD monitors is presented.
