Abstract :
The Accelerator Groningen Orsay project is a cooperative program between Dutch and French researchers to design and build a superconducting cyclotron. The machine is a compact, three-sector, 3-D multiparticle variable energy cyclotron with an effective bending coefficient K=600 and focusing coefficient KF=220. The cyclotron will be able to accelerate both light ions (protons up to 200 MeV) and heavy ions at central field strength ranging from 1.7 to 4.07 T. This average field is generated by two pairs of superconducting coils. The coils will be housed in a split cryostat in which maximum room-temperature access into the midplane is provided. Graphs detailing the coils´ magnetic fields, current densities, and axial forces for various design points are presented and discussed.
