Abstract
This article relates the history of wireless communications to the history of the Internet. The early work on packet switching is traced, and then a brief description of the critical events in the growth of the Internet is provided. Then, a vision of where the Internet is heading is presented, with a locus on where user participation, flexible applications and services, and innovation are appealing. A network with extreme mobility, ubiquity, personalization, adaptivity, video addiction, and surprising applications, as yet unimagined is foreseen.
