Abstract
To be a woman and a pilot was highly unusual in 1942 and represented a paradigm shift for American culture (Photo 1). World War II enabled America to try something new in 1942 : to train and utilize women pilots to support the war effort because of a shortage of male pilots. The desperate need did not mean all parties were supportive of the trial.
