Described is a 10 Gbit/s transmission at 850 nm realised using a 2 km-long singlemode photonic crystal fibre and a directly modulated singlemode vertical surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). Power penalty-free transmission was successfully achieved without an optical amplifier or a modulator
