Abstract :
17 stacked layers of three-dimensional photonic crystals containing light-emitters were constructed and the spontaneous emission characteristics investigated. Both an InGaAsP multiple quantum well light- emitting layer and artificial point defects were incorporated into the centre of the crystals. It is experimentally demonstrated that the spontaneous emission was suppressed by up to -30 dB and the artificial point defects yielded well-defined cavity modes with a minimum full-width-at-half-maximum of ~4 nm.
