Welcome to the second set of papers on traditional and emerging themes of interest to EMC practitioners. In this issue we address the Impact of Transients and the Physical Environment on Communications. Communications systems are finding application in virtually the entire engineering field and it is of considerable importance to understand their vulnerabilities to transient signals (impulsive noise) and also the physical environment in which they operate. Although the topic is vast in scope we hope here to give the reader the flavour of the issues involved and sensitise EMC engineers to the questions and difficulties that may arise.
