Abstract :
This paper presents partial-discharge (PD) analysis as a tool for predictive maintenance for medium-voltage switchgear systems. PD analysis is the newest technology being applied to MV electrical equipment and can detect corona or surface tracking behind metal barriers. This online PD monitoring proved that the equipment was properly assembled, had good cable termination by electrical contractor, and that no damage resulted to the insulation system. The safety related benefits, improved reliability, and outage planning savings far outweigh the costs for implementation.
