Abstract :
We demonstrate here that the equations of evolution of low gain free-electron laser systems have the form of a nested set of Bloch equations describing evolution of the nonlinear medium, together with one further Bloch equation which governs the evolution of the fields. In each case, the length of the Bloch vector is a conserved quantity, the physical nature of which is investigated.
