Abstract :
The authors propose and demonstrate a novel mechanism for Q-switching an Er-doped fibre laser at 1.5 μm, based on strong mode frequency modulation of the intracavity pump laser diode under current modulation. The laser is effectively Q-switched when the diode mode frequency is swept through the reflection window of a diffraction grating in the fibre laser cavity acting as a frequency-dependent reflector
