Abstract
This study was initiated in response to an accident in which a man was injured because of the step potential generated by a fire-related flashover of a 500 kV line. A safety guide for firemen is presented, describing the conditions under which flashovers are not likely to occur and the extent of the hazardous step potential zone, which should be avoided in cases where flashovers are likely to occur. Conditions where flashovers cannot occur are outlined
