Abstract
A summary is presented of an investigation into the feasibility of reducing basic insulation levels (BILs) for oil-immersed distribution transformers. A projected market make-up of popular kVA and system voltages was determined for the 5-35 kV insulation classes of pole-type and pad-mount distribution transformers. Reduced BIL design cases were used to determine the impact on the transformer´s design and performance. The final results provide both industry cost and total owning cost savings
