Abstract :
In safety-related systems, the issue of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is clearly even more important than in other installations. First, it is important that the equipment has sufficient immunity to avoid malfunctions due to electromagnetic interference, which might lead to danger either to people or property. Also, equipment which may not in itself have a safety role, should not interfere with the operation of other equipment that may perform safety functions. The role of The Health & Safety at Work Act and other legislation places responsibilities on the designers and manufacturers regarding the safety of workplace equipment. The author discusses the use of the legislation in ensuring such equipment conforms to EMC safety guidelines
