Abstract
Stress in film and stripe waveguides, formed by ion exchange in glass, is investigated. Mechanical effects of stress, like surface damage and elevations or dips of the surface, are demonstrated. The birefringence due to stress can be varied over a wide range by varying the ion-exchange conditions.
