Abstract :
Determination of the impulse response function for a complex linear system may require an output waveform to be deconvolved by a band-limited excitation time series. The standard least squares solution with a Tikhonov penalty term for the frequency weighted residual predicts a causal impulse response function with possibly significant out-of-band spectral energy. Use of a new penalty function depending on only out-of-band impulse response function spectral energy leads to solutions with comparable in-band accuracy and less out-of-band energy
