Abstract
Recommended clearances for substation fences from energized live parts within an electric supply station are not addressed in the National Electrical Safety Code. This paper documents the activities of the authors to develop guidelines for establishing such fence safety clearances. Results of questionnaires designed to determine present practices and the balloting process for the initial recommendation are summarized. Also, a final suggestion for fence safety clearances is presented with example applications. The intent of this paper is to generate discussions and obtain comments on the suggested safety clearances.
