Abstract
A system has been developed to control the conductor temperature of the new and existing underground cables by using the conductor current, the insulation shield temperature and a computer method to calculate the conductor temperature. A typical line section of a 240 kv HPOF pipe type cable was installed and tests were conducted to evaluate this system. The accurate control of the conductor temperature, allows the operation of the underground cables at maximum capacity under normal and emergency loads, without exceeding the recommended temperatures
