Abstract :
This paper examines the performance of M-ary PSK systems with pilot-aided coherent detection and transmission through a fading channel, as the one encountered in land-mobile satellite communications. Realistic fading models, based on measurements available in the literature, are considered. The choice of the pilot-extraction filter bandwidth is carefully examined, as a tradeoff between reducing the noise which is added to the recovered carrier and faithfully reproducing the fading process. Different spectral shapes for this process are contemplated and the effect of Doppler shift is also analyzed
