Abstract :
The first of the discussions presented in this paper reviews the special difficulties involved in bulk power system reliability evaluations. These are partly conceptual, partly concerning modeling, computational techniques, and data requirements. The second discussion analyzes the system failure modes which are of particular interest to system planners, including widespread cascading outages and generation bottling, and proposes a consistent set of bulk power system reliability definitions. The third discussion describes the principal uses of bulk power system reliability studies.
