Abstract
A review of conventional linear equilibrium conditions is given. It is shown that these conditions are not usually at all applicable to practical oscillators because the operating region is not to be so simply described. The relation of nonlinear effects tofrequency modulation is pointed out. A modified type of oscillator which conforms to the elementary linear conditions is described and its properties are discussed. The results are applied to a conventional grid leak and condenser oscillator to explain its modulating characteristics. The simplicity of the new circuit permits a discussion of amplitude inertia effects.
