Abstract :
In post deregulated era of power system, congestion in transmission line is more frequent. The line is said to be congested or overloaded when driven close or beyond its operating limits. It may happen that line of particular path gets overloaded due to low cost offered by generating units of that area. Appropriate Congestion Management (CM) strategy needs to be adopted to relieve line congestion with minimum investment. Congestion can be curtailed by rescheduling the output of some or all generators present in the network. In this paper a novel Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique is implemented to relieve the line congestion with minimum rescheduling cost of generators. Standard PSO, Natural Exponent Inertia Weight PSO with two variants e1-PSO and e2-PSO are implemented on Modified IEEE 30 bus 6 generator test system for optimal rescheduling of generators to manage congestion. Comparison of results shows that e2-PSO give better results and convergence characteristic as compared to other variants of PSO discussed in the paper.
