Abstract :
By using a quick-response current sensor and applying fiber-optic measurement technology, which is free of induction noise, it has been possible to develop a lightning current measuring system and conduct measurements by mounting it on 500 kV power transmission lines that are in actual service. The summer lightning current waveforms that were measured agreed closely with the standard impulse waveform. These results suggest that the method presently used to calculate the rise in the potential of towers provides amply accuracy
