Abstract
Service provider (SP) networks are evolving to support pure packet-based services while maintaining existing circuit-based revenue-generating infrastructure. Resilient packet ring (RPR) has emerged as a key technology that enables such migration. We propose a new scheme called flow-based priority distribution (FPD) that improves current RPR performance. FPD utilizes the total RPR bandwidth and allocates new flow demands based on availability, traffic priority and packet delay requirements. We demonstrate through our simulation and analysis the performance improvement in SP networks while maintaining CoS and QoS requirements
