Abstract :
The paper discusses the application of digital image-processing techniques to broadcast television with the goal of picture quality improvement. After defining picture quality targets and levels of system compatibility, a review of techniques is presented. These fall into the categories of achieving a wider picture format, improving vertical and horizontal resolution, and improving accurate color reproduction. Specific algorithms for vertical resolution improvement by display scan conversion and horizontal resolution improvement by three-dimensional signal processing are described. Many other approaches are also summarized and referenced, with a particular emphasis on European work.
