Abstract :
This issue of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems consists of a collection of papers on the Theory and Applications of Adaptive Signal Processing, an area that has received much recent attention. The widespread current interest in Adaptive Systems is evident from the large number (nearly 90) of papers submitted for possible inclusion in this issue. After the final set of papers for this issue were assembled the Guest Editors tried to find categories which would be helpful to the readers. We finally settled on two: 1) "Adaptive Systems Design and Applications" and 2) "Adaptive Algorithms." These are of course not mutually exclusive, but they indicate the emphasis of the papers. The papers in the first category may include algorithms, but the emphasis is on unique overall structures or applications such as cancellation, array processing, and so forth. The papers in the algorithm category tend to focus more on the analysis of specific adaptive algorithms, both new and old. They have tried to include a variety of papers here and we hope that each reader will find at least one paper related to his or her own current interest.
