Abstract
The procedure used and the abbreviated results of a study to optimize electrical power systems for offshore drilling and production platforms are discussed. Specific platform cases are defined and the electrical systems optimized based on space, weight, cost, reliability, and electrical characteristics. Each case is analyzed using conventional engineering considerations, but without the usual time constraints. Engineers are assisted in selecting a near optimum electrical power system for an offshore platform in a minimum number of man-hours. A technique not commonly used to evaluate rigorously the technical merits of multiple subjects is also documented.
