Abstract :
Satellites are no longer seen as an alternative to a terrestrial mobile telecommunications system or the (optical-fibre-based) integrated broadband communications network. Instead they are now being considered as one of the components of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System being developed within the European Union´s RACE Programme for the next century and as a component of the broadband ISDN. This paper discusses the role played by satellites in these systems and the issues which have to be addressed
