Abstract :
Reliability auditing is certainly not new to any industry. The chemical industry has, for many years, conducted its own forms of auditing. A structured approach has been adopted by the Dow Chemical Company simply because it has provided management with a tool that is easily understandable and that makes it possible to determine where the most improvements can be made for the least expenditure. This structured approach also allows for direct comparison of the various operating units within the total complex. Each facet of the structured approach is described. Definitions of the index numbering system used are explained as well as the index average with upper and lower control limits utilized in conjunction with range charts. The author also addresses the types of individuals chosen to perform the auditing, the training utilized, and what kinds of comparative success has ensued
