Abstract
A transition radiation detector that has been added to the NA31 CP violation experiment at CERN to improve the electron-pion separation is described. The detector consists of four radiators each followed by a proportional wire chamber. The wire chamber gas (Xe/CH4/He) has the same density as the CO2 in the radiators to minimize the hydrostatic pressure difference. The gas gain of the chambers is stabilized online by monitoring with radioactive sources. A technique for electron-pion separation is discussed, and results obtained with test beams are given
