Abstract
The performance of a tri-polarised multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system that employs three co-located orthogonal antennas at both ends of the communications link is investigated experimentally. Results indicate that such a system can support three independent sub-channels, resulting in a 10% outage channel capacity gain of the order of 5 bit/s/Hz over the traditional single-input single-output (SISO) system. The effect of introducing a relative angular shift between orientations of the transmit and receive antenna sets is also investigated both in azimuth and elevation. The compact size of the system should make it attractive in the design of future high-speed high-capacity communications systems including application on the handset
