Memories: Does Japan pose a permanent threat to Western manufacturers?

Over the past 10 years or so, the major US and European semiconductor manufacturers have developed an almost paranoid fear of their counterparts in Japan. But is this justified; or is it due to a lack of understanding about the Japanese mentality and way of business life?
