Abstract
Rapid changes in the energy paradigm lead to increased needs for fast innovation processes of emerging energy technologies. The assessment of the development status of a technology is crucial for research progress and market entry. Technology cycle analysis is a valid instrument to address these needs. In this paper a simple heuristic technology cycle analysis approach tailored for the specific requirements of technologies in early stages of development is presented. By using the example of the vanadium redox flow battery it is proven that an analysis of a limited number of three indicators may lead to comprehensive insights about the development status of a technology. These include identification of key knowledge holders and hints to address technical and economic bottlenecks.
