Abstract
This paper presents a practical application of reliability optimization for minimum cost using Lagrange multipliers, viz. optimization of power transmission line insulation. To allow for complex functional relationships and to reduce the difficulties of a pure analytic approach, a numerical and graphical solution is developed. This solution also enables the designer to specify the system from direct measurements and to use qualitative engineering judgement in choosing an acceptable solution.
