Abstract :
On the surface it is no different from any other sporting event. The students, all in colorful team uniforms, are intently focused on the playing field. The competition is tough, teamwork is critical, and this event is the culmination of months of hard work and preparation. Coaches help the competitors plan and execute their strategies. But upon closer examination, a spectator might be surprised to find the competitors crowded around small robots instead of soccer balls. More likely to be run by the science department than the athletic department, the Robot Challenge is one Women in Engineering (WIE) chapter´s latest outreach effort to improve science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in local schools.
