Abstract :
The concepts of radiation dose, dose equivalent, and related terms are defined and methods for measuring them are described. The various health effects of radiation-acute radiation sickness, cancer, genetic disease, and developmental deficiencies from in utero exposure-are discussed, and the risks are quantified. For perspective, risks from radiation are compared with common risks in our lives. It is concluded that radiation exposures of 1 rem per year or less represent only very minor increments in the multitude of risks faced by everyone
