Abstract :
Several 1982 issues of IEEE Spectrum have articles that take in-depth looks at computer progress. In March, D.H. Schaefer and J.R. Fischer sighted ultrafast machines as they peered ¿Beyond the supercomputer¿ [pp. 32¿37]. Advances in technology for ¿Computing at the speed limit¿ are discussed by R. Bernhard in July [pp. 26¿31]. In August, J. Backus described a new programming method to simplify software development in ¿Function-level computing¿ [pp. 22¿27], and E.J. Lerner described the shift toward ¿Automating programming¿ [pp. 28¿33].
