Abstract
Digital techniques reign supreme in solid-state technology. Integrated-circuit chips use digital pulse-code modulation to make possible new levels of performance in electronic equipment, switching power supplies use pulse-width modulation to save power and cut power loss, and image sensors use pulse-amplitude modulation to convert variable light patterns into a stream of pulses.
