Abstract
The breakup of telecommunications monopolies in a number of developed countries is discussed, with attention given to the joint ventures US corporations have entered into abroad. The work being done by standardization bodies which could pave the way for improved international trade in telecommunications equipment and services is outlined. Particular attention is given to the competitive situations in Great Britain, Canada, Japan, West Germany, France and Italy. The prospects for trade with China are also considered.
