Abstract
While growth in 1985 was considered disappointing, it is pointed out that important local area networks were announced by AT&T and IBM for linking personal computers and larger systems. However, as 1985 drew to a close, neither network was available commercially. Several new mass-storage systems appeared, including internal, high-speed hard-disk drives for the Macintosh and IBM personal computers, and the first read-only memories based on optical disks.
