Abstract :
The paper deals with those methods of measuring mechanical quantities in which the initial mechanical-electrical transduction changes a resistance, capacitance or inductance, or generates an e.m.f., The wire-resistance strain gauge and the piezo-electric unit, however, are not considered. Consideration is given mainly to pick-up units (transducers). Their basic mechanical and electrical operating principles are briefly discussed, and typical examples are given, classified according to the electrical principles involved. The associated equipment is briefly reviewed. Particular reference is made to mechanical measurement problems associated with aeronautics, although such problems might arise in other branches of engineering.
