Abstract :
The paper surveys the general position, distinguishing between multiple-unit and locomotive-hauled stock, each of which presents different problems. A brief historical treatment shows how standards of the past, especially for lighting, are not acceptable to-day. A low voltage supply from a motor-generator has superseded line-voltage series lighting. Developments are awaited in fluorescent lighting, the high cost of which cannot be justified at present. Emergency lighting is considered. The heating of locomotive-hauled stock by steam in a comprehensive main-line electrification in this country should be transitional only. Air-conditioning is not generally required, but conservation of heat by thermostatic control isdesirable. Some common defects are noted.
