Abstract :
The paper is introduced as a survey of some of the aspects of the design of electrical power systems in British aircraft. System requirements with related factors such as weight and its monetary value, and operating conditions, where the installation is affected by temperature, vibration, humidity, altitude and dynamic loadings, are outlined and examples are quoted. Recommended standard voltages, the electrical load analysis, and system testing methods are discussed within the broad outline of generators and other equipment, including the general practice in their installation, and cables and cabling, including methods of termination and identification. A number of examples are given of component failures experienced and of the remedial action taken, together with some details of their effect on operational safety and cost. Examples are also given of the influence on the proper functioning of electrical equipment of the conditions of operation of the aircraft. Production techniques are briefly outlined in the paper, and note is made of present and future staffing problems.
