Abstract :
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has released a recommendation for a world-wide HF (2-30 MHz) field-strength measurement campaign which is currently collecting data for building a global coverage database. Complementary sequences (CSs) have been embedded in the transmitted data stream to allow an estimate of the channel impulse response to be obtained at the receiver. The authors present a novel procedure for deriving the channel impulse response and discuss the achievable measurement precision. A channel parameter extraction algorithm minimises the channel characteristic information, thus achieving an economic use of storage space. Results are presented showing estimated impulse responses for off-air transmissions
